Acupuncture is based on the universal ideology of
Taoism to explain the phenomena of the Universe that are
composed by the dynamic interaction of two polar forces called
Yin and Yang, and Five Elements and their changes, maintaining
the balance of the nature.
Based on Five Elements Theory, natures balance
can be maintained due to continual interaction of destroying and
generating among five elements: fire, earth, metal, water,
and wood. Universe is also an oscillation of the dynamic forces
of Yin and Yang and their changes. There is no absolute Yin and
Yang. Each of them exists relatively to the other and their
relativity and inseparability are symbolized in the Chinese
Yin-Yang symbol.

By Taoism, all things, whether in the macrocosm
(universe) or microcosm (human body), must be in conformity with
the natural laws. By disobeying these laws people sow seeds of
disharmony and diseases. Once Yin and Yang become disharmonized
and Five Elements get disordered, the situation reflecting to
macrocosm is disaster, and to microcosm an illness. The
imbalance of Yin and Yang and the organic functions of human
body can be caused by the external factors, such as viruses and
weather, or internal factors, such as harmful effects of
damaging emotions of anger, fear, jealousy, worry, grief and so
on.
